Construction of the Istiqlal Mosque began during President Soekarno’s time on 24 August 1961. It was completed in 17 years, and was inaugurated by President Soeharto as a national mosque on 22 February 1978.
This mosque can accommodate up to 120,000 worshipers and is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth largest in the world in terms of congregation capacity.
