The back of the new Rp. 100,000 denomination displays a picture of the natural scenery of the Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua.

The Raja Ampat Islands are a district in West Papua Province. This archipelago consists of 4 large islands: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool, and other 1,847 small islands. The government center is in Waisai, South Waigeo District, about 36 miles from Sorong City (RajaAmpat).

Because of the beauty of the underwater scenery, most tourists who come to Raja Ampat are divers. However, this location is also interesting for non-diving tourists because it also has very beautiful white sandy beaches, a group of enchanting karst islands and unique endemic flora such as red bird of paradise, Wilson’s bird of paradise, maleo waigeo, various parrots, Waigeo cuscus, and various types of orchids (Wikipedia).

Visiting these islands is not too difficult even though it does take quite a lot of time and money. To go to Raja Ampat, the first starting point you have to go to is the city of Sorong in West Papua. The IATA code for Sorong airport is SOQ.

Flights are available from Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Ambon, or Manado to Sorong.

2. Komodo National Park in 50,000 rupiah notes.

Komodo National Park is located in the provinces of West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara. This National Park consists of three large islands: Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Padar Island as well as several small islands. The land area of this national park is 603 km² and the total area is 1817 km² (Wikipedia).

In 1980 this national park was established to protect Komodo dragons and their habitat. There are 277 animal species there which are a combination of animals originating from Asia and Australia, consisting of 32 mammal species, 128 bird species and 37 reptile species. Along with Komodo dragons, at least 25 species of land animals and birds are protected, due to their limited numbers or limited distribution. (Wikipedia).

The coral reefs in the waters of Komodo National Park are among the most beautiful in the world. The various shapes and colors of hard and soft corals are very interesting to see. There are more than 1000 types of fish, 260 types of coral and 70 types of sponges and many other invertebrates that can be found in many places in Komodo National Park.

To go to Komodo National Park, the starting point you have to go to is Labuan Bajo (sometimes also called Labuhan Bajo) in East Nusa Tenggara. There are transportation routes available by air and sea to reach Labuan Bajo. By air, the destination airport is Labuan Airport  or Komodo Airport (IATA code: LBJ). There are direct flight routes from Jakarta, or you can transit in Denpasar, Bali first.

3. Derawan Islands in 20,000 rupiah notes.

Sumber: Bank Indonesia, 2016

The Derawan Islands are an archipelago located to the east of the island of Kalimantan, and are included in the administrative area of Berau Regency.

There are four famous islands in the archipelago: Maratua Island, Derawan Island, Sangalaki Island and Kakaban Island which are home to rare species of green turtles and hawksbill turtles.

According to Disbudpar Berau Regency, the Derawan Islands are part of Eco Region The Sulu-Sulawesi Sea which crosses Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Eco Region is located in the center of the world’s coral triangle area with the highest coral biodiversity in the world. It is called The Coral Triangle because it is the epicenter of marine life which has a diversity of types of marine biota. Coral reefs in this area constitute 53% of the world’s coral reefs. In fact, based on research developed, the Derawan Islands are one of the most important multi-country feeding grounds in the world.

There are two ways to get to the Derawan Islands, First is via Berau, and the second is via Tarakan in North Kalimantan. The sea trip via Berau is faster because the distance is closer to Derawan, which is only about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, if you go via Tarakan, the journey will take longer, around 3 hours by boat. Because the distance is closer to Derawan, the cost of renting a boat from Berau is relatively cheaper than going via Tarakan.

Flights are available from Jakarta Airport to Kalimarau Airport in Berau (IATA code: BEJ) with transit in Balikpapan or Tarakan. For those who like to find cheaper ticket price combinations, you can try the Jakarta – Balikpapan route first, then continue with the Balikpapan – Berau route. Alternatively, you could also try going via Samarinda, then continuing to Berau.
