Neuschwanstein Castle, also known as Schloss Neuschwanstein, is a 19th-century palace located on a rugged hill in the foothills of the Alps in the very south of Germany, just north of Austria.

The castle stands above the narrow gorge of the Pöllat stream, east of the Alpsee and Schwansee lakes, close to the mouth of the Lech and Forggensee. It is located in the region of Bavaria, in the municipality of Schwangau, above the incorporated village of Hohenschwangau, which is also the location of Hohenschwangau Castle. The closest larger town is Füssen.

The Castle is often considered a must-visit destination for tourists for several reasons:

  1. Historical Significance: The castle has a rich history, having been commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century. It serves as a symbol of the king’s admiration for composer Richard Wagner and his desire for a private retreat.
  2. Architectural Marvel: Despite its medieval appearance, the castle was equipped with the latest technological comforts of its time. It features a walled courtyard, an indoor garden, spires, towers, and even an artificial cave.
  3. Stunning Location: The castle is located in a picturesque setting, atop a rock ledge over the Pollat Gorge in the Bavarian Alps. The views of the surrounding landscape are breathtaking.
  4. Cultural Experience: Visiting the castle provides a glimpse into the life and times of King Ludwig II and the cultural history of Bavaria.
  5. Popularity: The castle attracts more than 1.3 million visitors annually, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.

The castle was built atop a rock ledge over the Pöllat Gorge in the Bavarian Alps. Despite the Munich Residenz being one of the most extensive palace complexes in the world at the time, King Ludwig II felt the need to escape from the constraints he saw himself exposed to in Munich. He chose to pay for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing rather than Bavarian public funds.

Construction of the castle began in 1868 but was never completed. The castle was intended to serve as a private residence for the king, but he died in 1886, and it was opened to the public shortly after his death. Since then, more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer.

Despite its romanticized medieval design, Louis also required it to have all the newest technological comforts. The lavish structure is complete with a walled courtyard, an indoor garden, spires, towers, and an artificial cave.
