The 1974 discovery of thousands of life-sized Terracotta Warriors was one of the archaeological sensations of the 20th century. Located in the heart of China’s Shaanxi province, the figures date from 210 BC, over 2,000 years ago, were meant to guard the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, in the afterlife.

The emperor’s mausoleum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a testament to his power and vision. It is believed that over 700,000 workers were involved in its construction. This incredible army of life-sized clay soldiers, offers a unique window into China’s ancient history.

The site consists of three pits each containing thousands of terracotta figures, including soldiers, horses, and chariots. Each warrior is distinct, with intricate details such as facial expressions, hairstyles, and clothing, reflecting the diversity of the Qin army.

Site visitors can admire the warriors up close in Pit 1, the largest and most impressive of the three. Here, rows of warriors stand in battle formation, ready for combat. Pit 2, though smaller, offers a variety of military units, while Pit 3 is thought to represent the command post.

The Terracotta Warriors Museum also houses a collection of bronze weapons and chariots, providing further insight into the military technology of the Qin Dynasty. The museum’s exhibition hall displays two bronze chariots, unearthed in 1980, which are considered national treasures.
