Wakatobi National Park is a marine national park located in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The park is named after the four main islands it covers: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. This is the third largest marine park in Indonesia, covering an area of 13,900 km².
The Wakatobi Archipelago is home to a rich and diverse marine life, with 942 fish species and 750 coral reef species. The park has 25 groups of coral reefs, including fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls. The park’s coral reefs are part of the Asia-Pacific World Coral Triangle and offer clear waters and a rich bio-diverse underwater life. The park is also the habitat of large and small fish species, dolphins, turtles, and whales.
The park’s islands are inhabited by the Bajo communities, seafaring nomads who inhabit many of Indonesia’s remote islands. The park’s flora and fauna include mangrove forest, coastal forest, lowland swamp forest, riverbank vegetation, lowland rainforest, mountain rainforest, and coral reefs. The highest elevation is 274 meters on Wangi-Wangi, followed by Lagole Hill (271m) on Tomia, Terpadu Hill (222 m) on Binongko, and Mount Sampuagiwolo (203 m) on Kadelupa.
The park is a unique destination for divers and beach lovers, with the largest barrier reef in Indonesia and a habitat of dolphins, turtles, and whales. The park offers various activities such as diving, snorkeling, and island hopping.
How to Get to Wakatobi
To visit Wakatobi National Park, you can fly to Matahora Airport in Wangi-Wangi Island from Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, or Kendari. You can also reach Wangi-Wangi Island by sea from Kendari. Wanci is the name of the port on Wangi-Wangi Island. However, you have to be extra patient because the total travel time by sea can take more than 10 hours.
