The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, commonly known as Sagrada Familia, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world.

This is the most famous of Gaudí’s works. Antoni Gaudí (25 June 1852 – 10 June 1926) was a Catalan architect and designer from Spain, known as the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism. His works have a highly individualized, sui generis style, and most are located in Barcelona.

The Sagrada Família, has been under construction for 140 years, with the work beginning back in 1882. It’s now in the final phase, and it is expected to be fully completed by 2030 or 2032.

The church presents an excellent depiction of the relationship between man, nature, and religion through its architecture and facade sculptures. Climbing one of its towers will give you a unique view of Barcelona.

The groundbreaking for the Sagrada Família took place on 19 March 1882 under the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. However, when Villar resigned in 1883, the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí took over as chief architect. Gaudí transformed the project with his unique architectural and engineering style, combining elements of Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Modernista forms.

The Sagrada Família is notable for its tactile organic form and is one of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks. It was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on 7 November 2010, proclaiming it a minor basilica. The church’s Nativity Facade and Crypt are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Sagrada Família, with its intricate designs and ambitious plans, stands as a testament to Gaudí’s genius and the perseverance of all those involved in its construction. It continues to captivate visitors from around the world with its grandeur and promise of completion in the near future.
