The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is located near the town of Sandakan, in the Malaysian Sabah District of North Borneo. This is one of only four places in the world that was established to preserve and protect orangutans.
Founded in the corner of the Kabili-Sepilok rainforest reserve in 1964, this center has expanded in recent years as news of its work began to spread and the number of orphaned and abandoned orangutans continued to increase because of the continuing destruction of their natural habitat.
This charming creature, with its orange hair and smart eyes, is cared for at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center until they are strong enough or old enough to return to live independently in the forests of Borneo. The raised wooden walkway takes you to the observation deck where orangutans emerge from the rainforest to be fed by the guards. Sepilok Center complements their rainforest diet with two decoys at 10:00 and 15:00. Even though not all orangutans appear at feeding time, this is the best time to see them.
